All officers and soldiers need to be fit. Exactly how fit depends on which Army job they choose. But whether you’re on the front line in the Infantry or repairing a tank in camp, you need to be able to meet physical challenges head on. It’s not just about your own safety and success – it’s about the other soldiers in your team who rely on you.
That’s why the Army tests your fitness as part of the selection process. You’ll be put through your paces with several strength tests as well as a 1.5-mile run.
The Tests Are as Follows:
Carry Test
Carry two jerry cans each weighing 20KG (44lb) over a set course. The set course is a distance of 150 metres which is expected to be completed in a maximum of 2 minutes
Press Up’s and Sit up’s
Need to do; 44 press ups,
50 sit ups
1.5 Mile Run
Depending on what regiment you want to join, depends on what time you need to beat. You are told to aim for under 10.30 but these are the times for certain regiments:
· 12.45, Infantry
· 13.15, Royal Artillery, Royal Armoured Corps, Royal Engineers, Household Cavalry
· 9.18 Parachute Regiment
Dynamic Lift
This test measures how much weight can be lifted from the floor to a height of 1.45 m. Using an Incremental Lift Machine at 5-10 kg and you will need to lift the weight to a height of 1.45 m. Each time complete the weight will increase.
Static Lift
You need to pull against a Dynamometer; This measures the maximum amount of force you can exert in a single lift.
Back Extension
Strapped to a machine, and asked to extend back as much as you can. The machine will slowly increase the amount of resistance.
Hang under beam with arms fully extended, then need to pull yourself up so your chin is over the beam.
Dynamic and Static lift pass rate is based on your height and weight
The last two are only to give the Army a better insight into your fitness levels. If you fail, you wont fail the entire medical.
All these tests have pass marks, however to guarantee a pass you should aim to smash the pass mark they give you!
